Immediate opening for a resident veterinarian at Hanover Shoe Farms, the greatest name in harness racing! New graduates are welcome to apply.
Veterinary work will be shared with other resident veterinarians. The distributions of the responsibilities can be tailored to the applicant's interest. Responsibilities include reproductive work, foaling and neonatal medicine, emergencies, and general veterinary care of the farm's resident mares, foals, yearlings, stallions, and retirees.
There are a great variety of cases seen from minor things such as small wounds, corneal ulcers, and hoof abscesses to more complicated cases like dystocias, dummy and septic foals, medical neonatal diarrhea cases and medical colics. We treat most medical cases in house; therefore, it is a great opportunity for learning and growth.
Hanover Shoe Farms is a large Standardbred breeding operation standing several stallions. We are expecting around 300 foals this season and will be breeding close to 400 mares. The farm is equipped with a neonatal hyperbaric oxygen chamber, DR equipment, and there is also access to a heated hospital barn and office area with the ability to run IV fluids and a hoist for an Anderson equine sling. A fully equipped practice vehicle will be provided along with reproductive ultrasound, and stall side SAA and IgG readers and tests. Weekends and on-call will be shared equally between the veterinarians. The workload is generally heavy in the spring and summer during the busy foaling and breeding season and slower during the off-season with shorter days and shorter work weeks.
Licensure in the state of Pennsylvania or the ability to obtain a PA license is required. Salary will be based on qualifications and experience. Seasonal benefits include paid vacation, on-farm housing, practice vehicle, and licensing fees. Additional benefits are available for permanent resident veterinarians.
